SMEC has announced it is to upgrade the Isabella Weir Spillway and Embankment in Canberra, Australia, in a project designed to ensure the dam meets industry standards and reduces the risk of flooding.
Part of the Tuggeranong Creek Water Quality Protection Program, Isabella Weir is a low-built dam that regulates the flow of water to Lake Tuggeranong (an artificial lake holding stormwater from neighbouring areas). The upgrade project involves the extension of the Isabella Weir Spillway (increasing capacity by 60%); the removal, treatment and disposal of sediment from the upstream Isabella Pond; and the upgrade of the weir to meet Australian National Committee On Large Dams (ANCOLD) dam guidelines for flood protection and flood management response.
Under the contract awarded by the Australian Capital Territory Government, SMEC’s services will include: site investigations and reporting (geotechnical, survey and environmental); identifying issues associated with the proposed construction and removal of sediment; developing treatment methodologies (including measures to address public safety and fish management); hydraulic modelling; concept designs through to final designs; managing tender documentation; and construction monitoring.
