Arusha Technical College (ATC) in Tanzania is reported to be setting up a hydropower training centre at Kikuletwa power station, which had previously been owned by Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).

Two years ago TANESCO handed ownership of Kikuletwa over to the college for conversion into a research and training base. Constructed in the 1930s, the hydropower plant was one of the first in Tanzania but ceased operation in 1984. Previous feasibility studies have indicated that the entire Kikuletwa cascade may potentially provide up to 17MW of electricity.

ATC’s aim is to refurbish the plant and use it as an international training centre, as well supplying power to the national grid. Technical assistance will be provided by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, while the International Centre for Hydropower will help to develop the curriculum and training programmes.
