The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has decided to implement the Rohtas Dam in Jhelum to help mitigate floods and store water for agriculture, it has announced on its website.

In a meeting attended by WAPDA Chairman Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain (Retd), it was confirmed that WAPDA are looking at ways to develop the project more vigorously.

The Rohtas Dam site has been identified across the River Kahan, a tributary of River Jhelum in a gorge near Rohtas Fort about 7.5km South of Dina Town in Jhelum.

The main objectives of the project include mitigating floods, storing surplus flows from the Mangla Reservoir during floods, while also producing 100MW of low-cost hydropower.

The project envisages a link channel taking-off from Mangla and ending at Rohtas to divert surplus flows from Mangla Reservoir to the proposed Rohtas Dam. The initial studies suggest that Rohtas Dam will have a water storage capacity of 2 to 3 million acre feet.
