Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd (MESL), the concessionaire company of Jebba Hydropower Plant in Nigeria, has awarded Andritz Hydro a contract for the integral rehabilitation of generating unit 2G6 at the key power plant.
Andritz’s scope of supply and services for the two-year project includes the full rehabilitation of the intake gate, turbine, generator and all unit related auxiliary systems. A new digital turbine governor, excitation system, unit control system and main step-up transformer will also be supplied for the generating unit.
The Jebba plant is located in North-Central Nigeria on the Niger River, 103km downstream of Kainji Dam. The power plant, which was commissioned in 1984, is equipped with six generating units and is a multipurpose scheme for power generation, flood control and, in principle, navigation.
Jebba is equipped with propeller type turbines with a rated capacity of 96.4MW each, at a rated net head of 27.6m and a discharge of 385m³/sec. The runner diameter is 7.1m. Each turbine can generate a maximum output of 102.9MW at a max net head of 29.3m. All turbines have a clockwise rotational speed of 93.75 r.p.m; the propeller type turbines were originally manufactured by Andritz (former Escher Wyss) and the generators were supplied by Hitachi (Japan).
In addition to the d rehabilitation works on enerating unit 2G6 at Jebba, MESL is planning extensive rehabilitation works on further generating units at both Jebba and Kainji hydropower plant.
