Enercan (Campos Novos Energia), a consortium formed by Celesc (25%), Copel, CEEE, Inepar, Desenvix, Onix, and Companhia Tecnica de Energia Electrica, is investing R$533M (US$294M) to construct an independent hydroelectric plant in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil.
The plant on the Canoas river is expected to have an installed capacity of 880MW. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2001, and is expected to be completed by 2006. Enercan paid Aneel, Brazil’s state-owned power agency, R$720M (US$398M) for the right to construct the plant and generate hydroelectricity over a period of 35 years.
