The Savannah district of the US Army Corps of Engineers has awarded ABB Power Generation’s hydro power division in the US a contract for rehabilitation work at the Storm Thurmond hydro plant in South Carolina.
ABB’s work will include rewinding seven generator stators and related rehabilitation work. As a consequence each generator will be uprated from 44.4MVA to 57.5MVA.
The multi-turn stator coils for the project will be manufactured by ABB Service in Alabama.
Work on the project will last for about three years. Located near Clarks Hill in South Carolina, the Storm Thurmond plant has been in operation since 1954.
