INVESTIGATORS ARE PROBING A fish kill which occurred downstream of the Keenlyside dam, on the Columbia river, Canada. Dam owner BC Hydro is liable to fines of up to US$100,000 if it is found to have violated provincial and federal statutes on fisheries and the environment.
The incident occurred on 10 July 2001 when water levels in the river dropped suddenly, creating landlocked pools as well as exposing gravel beds. Reports say that BC Hydro reduced the flow of water below the dam in response to a request by the Bonneville Power Authority, as well as to carry out some repairs and inspect the outlet structure.
Unfortunately, the shut down occurred during a hot spell with 40? temperatures, which adversely affected the fish.
