POROUS MATERIALS OF the US has launched the Capillary Saturation Porometer, an instrument designed to determine pore volume, without using mercury, and to measure liquid permeability.
The instrument works by soaking a sample in a liquid, which then spontaneously fills the pores in the sample. The pressure of a non-reacting gas on the top of the sample is increased to displace the liquid from the pores. The volume of the displaced liquid from pores is then measured. The pore diameter is obtained from pressure. In order to measure liquid permeability, the pressure on the liquid maintained on the top of the sample is increased, the volume of liquid flowing out of the sample is measured and the liquid permeability is then computed.
The fully automated instrument contains a number of state-of-the-art components and Windows based software. According to the company, testing time is minimal.
