Brascan Corporation of Toronto, Canada, was the successful bidder for four hydro power stations owned by Canada’s Ontario Power Generation (OPG).
The stations, located on the Mississagi river, were built between 1950 and 1970 and have a combined generating capacity of almost 490MW.
The four plants expand Brascan’s total hydroelectric generating capacity to 1500MW and total number of generating stations to 31 across Ontario, Quebec, Maine, British Columbia and Louisiana.
The generating assets sold by OPG are Wells generating station (239MW), Aubrey Falls station (162MW), George W Rayner station (46MW) and Red Rock Falls station (41MW).
The sale includes four water storage dams on Rocky Island Lake, built in 1949, which provide storage for all of the hydroelectric facilities located along the Mississagi river. The four dams – Control dam, Side dam No. 1, Side dam No. 2 and Round Lake dam – facilitate the peaking operation of these power plants.
