Eletrobras has confirmed to the Peruvian Government that it is looking to develop five projects, and has shown interest in a further five plants – all together the 10 largest in the country.
Among the confirmed projects are Inambari (1355MW) in Made de Dios, and Paquitzapango (1379MW) in Junin. The former has an investment budget of US$2B while no figure has been given for the latter. Both plants are to be operational by 2014.
Suez Energy Peru, a subsidiary of GDF Suez, is studying construction of up to three projects with the south of the country proving the more attractive. The additional demand from mining companies in the region is expected to reach 1GW.
Buenaventura is to invest in three projects with combined installed capacity of about 200MW. The expected investment is values at approximately US$300M, according to the company, and not double that sum as announced by state media.
The projects are Maranon (96MW), Huanza (90.6MW) and a third plant that will be located in Oyon valley.
The Ministry of Energy and Mines has said that the major mining firms will need an additional 2.6GW of power over the next seven years.
