Financed by the World Bank Group and the European Investment Bank, Gilgel Gibe started supplying power to the capital city Addis Ababa and other regions in the south of the country at the end of February.

Commissioning of the plant was attended by prime minister Meles Zenawi, the minister of infrastructure Kassu Illala and representatives of the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation.

Gilgel Gibe consists of 3 x 66.7MW Francis turbines supplied by Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation, which also delivered the digital governor system and turbine inlet valves and carried out erection and commissioning work.
