Rain and snowmelt brings SSE record for hydro production

Energy production from conventional hydroelectric schemes operated in the North of Scotland by SSE Generation, the generation division of SSE plc, has reached the highest levels since records began in the 1930s - with almost three weeks of the 2011/12 financial year still to go.

Output for this financial year has already passed the previous record of 3890GWh and is set to pass 4000GWh for the first time.

SSE’s Managing Director for Generation, Paul Smith, has attributed the all-time record for hydroelectricity production to the firms continued investment in refurbishment of its hydro schemes in the North of Scotland. coupled with a particularly high amount of rainfall and snowmelt in each hydro catchment. “This investment and weather conditions that are ideal for hydro production has ensured the continuing success of hydro power as a valued source of renewable energy,” he said.

SSE owns and operates more than 50 hydroelectric power stations in Highland, Perth and Kinross and Argyll and Bute, with a total capacity of 1150MW. This includes the 100MW Glendoe hydroelectric scheme, where electricity production is expected to resume this summer.
