The 5.85GW Nuozhadu hydroelectric project on China’s Mekong River has entered full operation, developer Huaneng Group has announced.
The project, which features nine 650MW generating units, is located on the upstream section of the river in Yunnan Province, and is the country’s fourth largest operating hydroelectric facility. It includes a 261.5m high vertical core-wall rockfill dam which is currently ranked as the highest in China.
Nuozhadu is a major a part of the west-east electricity transmission programme in China, which has been designed to deliver energy to key electricity markets from remote western regions, Reuters reported.
The first of the project’s units entered operation back in September 2012.
