The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) is now accepting entries for the 2025 ITA Tunnelling Awards. The awards recognize achievements in underground infrastructure across eight categories, with winners to be announced at a symposium and gala dinner on 1 October 2025 in Belgrade, Serbia. The event will be held in partnership with the Serbian Association for Tunnels and Underground Structures as part of the Southeastern European Tunnelling Conference (SETC-2025).

Projects eligible for submission must have completed major civil engineering works between 1 March 2022 and 1 April 2025. The deadline for entries is 15 May 2025.

Award categories

  1. Major Project of the Year (over €500 million)
    Recognizes large-scale projects that demonstrate excellence and future-forward design.
    2024 Winner: Thames Tideway CSO Supersewer, London, UK
  2. Project of the Year (€50–€500 million)
    Highlights technically advanced projects with strong safety and innovation records.
    2024 Winner: Brenner Base Railway – Lot H52 Hochstegen, Austria
  3. Project of the Year (up to €100 million)
    Focuses on smaller-scale projects with significant societal or environmental benefits.
    2023 Winner: Mount Royal Rehabilitation for REM Project, Montreal, Canada
  4. Renovation Project of the Year
    Acknowledges complex projects involving maintenance or upgrades to active underground infrastructure.
    2024 Winner: Manfreida Highway Tunnel Renovation Project, Italy
  5. Technical Innovation of the Year
    Rewards engineering advancements that improve safety, efficiency, or sustainability.
    2024 Winner: Disc cutter wear sensor package and TBM monitoring system, South Korea
  6. Product/Equipment Innovation of the Year
    Recognizes transformative product or equipment developments in underground construction.
    2024 Winner: Ultra-small Turning Radius Hard Rock TBM, China
  7. Elevated Thinking Underground: Shaping the Future
    Celebrates leadership and creativity in projects with long-term impacts on communities.
    2024 Winner: Modern Underground Cemetery, Israel
  8. Young Tunneller of the Year
    Open to professionals born on or after 1 January 1990 who have shown exceptional leadership or innovation.
    2024 Winner: Luigi D’Angelo, Italy
