The definition of suitable design criteria in hydraulic systems is of the utmost importance and has become a priority for a good project implementation. The objective of this paper is to systematise practical guidelines as design criteria of different components, in order to create design methodologies. The latter are based on project concerns towards a stable and efficient operation and dynamic behaviour of the system, when submitted either to normal or extreme conditions.

Hydraulic systems currently have problems that may be due to inadequate conception and design, installation or performance, as well as mechanical behaviour of pipe materials and, eventually, accidents caused by malfunction of equipment components. During design stages two main situations must be considered: the normal and the expected abnormal operation of the system.

This paper aims at the analysis of the main factors of each component, which compose a typical pressurised hydraulic system, whether for municipal water distribution, hydro power or pumping systems. However, the correct evaluation of basic design ground rules will depend upon the system type and the safety level required during the system operation.
