Neil Kermode OBE, the managing director of the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, has been honoured with the Outstanding Contribution Award at the Subsea Expo Awards 2024.
The Subsea Expo Awards, organized by the Global Underwater Hub (GUH), annually commend the exceptional achievements of individuals and companies across various sectors including oil and gas, decommissioning, offshore energy, defense, aquaculture, and marine science.
Neil Kermode's recognition stems from his steadfast dedication over two decades to combat climate change. Throughout his career, he has spearheaded initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions and propelling the global development of marine renewable energy technologies.
Under Neil's leadership, EMEC has been at the forefront of groundbreaking projects encompassing marine energy technologies, subsea data centers, green hydrogen demonstrations, and sustainable aviation fuel endeavors. His advocacy has been pivotal in shaping regulatory frameworks and garnering public sector support to position the UK as a focal point for wave and tidal energy innovation.
Sue Barr, Chair of the UK Marine Energy Council, lauded Neil's contributions, stating: "The GUH Outstanding Contribution Award seeks to find people who really have given their all for their industry. Neil personifies this, with his work at EMEC but also more broadly. His thoughtful approach to how we describe and place the marine energy industry in a turbulent policy and global landscape has been inspirational and we are lucky to have him championing the marine energy sector."
Expressing his gratitude for the accolade, Neil Kermode remarked: "I am genuinely grateful for the award from this important industry. The work done underwater every day in Scotland is remarkable and the skills and equipment used are exactly what we will need to help make offshore wind, tidal and wave energies a success. I’m delighted that my small contribution through my work at EMEC to these burgeoning sectors is recognised and believe this shows the transition the oil and gas sector is making towards renewables."
