Ethiopia Electric Power has announced that 87% of the Gibe III hydropower dam on the Omo River has been completed.

Once complete, the project’s ten 187MW turbine units will increase the country’s energy coverage by 94%. Two of the units are expected to begin generating electricity by Spring 2015.

Other projects around the country are also progressing well and existing hydro dams, such as Tekeze and Gilgel Gibe II, are being expanded.

Despite its 45,000MW potential for hydropower, Ethiopia has only developed, and uses, 2268MW.
