In 2011, record snow and rains during the spring season prompted USACE to release huge volumes of water from the six Missouri River dams, which in turn damaged Fort Peck’s spillway gates. Areas downstream from the dam were also eroded.
Low funds however mean that USACE can only afford to spend $46M in the near future for the damage assessments and repair work, the Associated Press reported. Most of the available funds are expected to be spent on spillway repairs to ensure the dam can safely release water.
