A project to rehabilitate the Chitral and Dargai in Pakistan is to benefit from over €50 million in funding from the French Agency for Development (AFD).
In mid July, Noor Ahmed, Secretary of Economic Affairs Division (EAD), H.E. Marc Barety, Ambassador of France, and Jacky Amprou, Country Director of the AFD, signed a Credit Facility Agreement worth €50 million and a Grant Agreement worth €0.2 million for the rehab work, which will increase power capacity at Dargai station to 22MW from 20MW and Chitral from 1MW to 5MW.
WAPDA has been implementing a two-pronged strategy for optimal utilization of hydropower resources in Pakistan. Under the strategy, WAPDA has not only initiated new hydropower projects but has also been rehabilitating and upgrading its existing hydel power stations to maximize the ratio of environment friendly and low-cost hydroelectricity in the National Grid.
Located in Malakand. Dargai was constructed in 1952, while Chitral, located in Chitral, was completed in two phases in 1975 and 1982.
