The hydropower sector in Myanmar has received over 40% of total investment in the country, an official has said, signaling strong growth for the market.

At a conference held last month at the Myanmar Investment Commission Office, Aung Naing Oo, Director General of Directorate of Investment and Companies said that the hydropower, mining, oil and gas industries covered 85& of total investment, with hydro taking the largest share.

In light of this, Yangon, Myanmar will host the inaugural Myanmar Energy Investment Summit 2013 (MEIS 2013), to be held from 3 – 4 September 2013 at the Traders Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar.

The MEIS 2013 is held in conjunction with the Myanmar International Energy Week, and is organised by CONFEXHUB, Malaysia in Partnership with BOZEC International, UK.. The event is supported by the Myanmar Ministry of Energy and hosted by the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry and the Renewable Energy Association Myanmar (REAM).

The Ministry of Electric Power (MoEP) is also involved in the Summit and regards hydropower as a priority and recent foreign investment in power generation projects are a testimony to the potential growth opportunities.

This international summit is targeting 200 delegates from 25 countries representing the energy sector. Companies involved in hydropower, water resources, petroleum, gas, and power sectors are invited to the conference. The goal is to provide a platform for potential investors to gather in Yangon to be updated on market potential and development plans for the energy sector in Myanmar, and the implication of new economic regulations arising from the latest parliamentary decisions for the energy sectors.

The summit will focus on the following areas:

• Myanmar’s Energy Sectors’ Outlook and Opportunities
• Myanmar’s Energy Sectors’ Development Plans for the renewable industry and hydropower
• Latest Foreign Investment Laws for the Energy Sectors
