HydroWing has signed an agreement with a subholding of Indonesia’s state-owned power company PLN (Perusahaan Listrik Negara) to advance plans for Indonesia’s first tidal energy project. The 10MW tidal current power plant is slated for East Nusa Tenggara in the Indonesian archipelago.

This partnership follows a 2022 Memorandum of Understanding between HydroWing and PLN to accelerate tidal energy development in Indonesia through site selection, resource assessment, and initial engineering. After a nationwide evaluation, East Nusa Tenggara was selected for its potential in tidal energy.

HydroWing, a division of the UK-based Inyanga Marine Energy Group, brings expertise in tidal energy to the project, while PLN, as Indonesia’s national power provider, will manage aspects of site surveying and impact studies. HydroWing will lead feasibility and technology studies, project timelines, and operational planning, with both parties collaborating on licensing and environmental assessments.

“Indonesia is seen as a prime market for our innovative tidal energy technology,” said Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group. “Indonesia has amongst the best tidal potential in the world due to the throughflow of marine current from the Pacific Ocean to the Indian Ocean. There is also a funnel effect between the islands of the archipelago, which strengthens the tidal energy potential still further. This pilot project at East Nusa Tenggara will be pivotal for us and our local partners to move rapidly towards significant commercial-scale projects in the Indonesian archipelago.”

Jean-Christophe Allo, Commercial Manager at Inyanga, added: “This exciting new project builds on our success in South East Asia. Earlier this year, we were awarded the contract to build South East Asia’s first tidal energy plant at Capul in the Philippines, and now we are thrilled to develop the first tidal energy plant in Indonesia at East Nusa Tenggara. This innovative project will contribute to the region’s transition to Net Zero, delivering energy security with affordable, 24/7, and renewable energy.”

The PLN subholding will oversee site-specific assessments such as bathymetry, sediment sampling, and interconnection impact studies, with HydroWing providing project planning and technology studies to ensure the project’s viability and alignment with Indonesia’s renewable energy goals.
