Energy company illwerke vkw has suspended plans for the Mellenbach small hydropower plant after failing to secure support from the local municipality of Mellau, Austria.
The company has been working on various renewable energy projects to help Vorarlberg achieve energy independence by 2050. Small hydropower is considered an important part of this plan, with an estimated potential of 150 to 200GWh of energy generation.
However, despite multiple discussions, Mellau’s local authorities did not approve the project. In response, illwerke vkw reiterated its commitment to only developing wind and small hydropower projects in agreement with local communities. As a result, the company has decided to suspend the project indefinitely.
