First power has flowed from the Muskrat Falls hydropower project, marking a major milestone for the 824MW project in Labrador, Canada.
The first unit at Muskrat Falls was successfully synced to the electricity grid this week, Nalcor Energy announced in a statement. Testing on this first generating unit will continue over the next few weeks, prior to the unit being placed into full service this Autumn.
Nalcor Energy noted that it had reached this milestone alongside the Innu Nation, it’s Indigenous partner in the development, contractors, unions and workers, despite the challenges presented by Covid-19.
Power from the second unit at the project is expected later this year, with the third and fourth units coming online in 2021.
