The US$2.2B project calls for construction of a concrete gravity diversion dam, headrace tunnel, surge chamber and underground powerhouse with four generating units.

The JV – Neelum Jhelum Consultants – will undertake engineering and construction management services for the 963MW scheme over eight years. It is being developed by the country’s Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).

Other members of the JV are local firms Nespak, ACE and NDC. In addition, Norwegian company Norplan is part of the venture

The project is a priority scheme in the country’s Indus Basic Water Treaty with India. Work on the scheme started in 2003 but was soon suspended due to insufficient funds.
