Hub Power Company (Hubco) has announced that the 84MW New Bong hydroelectric project has been successfully commissioned in Pakistan, two months ahead of schedule.
The project, developed by Hubco’s majority owned subsidiary Laraib Enery Company on the Jhelum River in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), completed commercial operation tests and was fully commissioned on 23 March. The project was developed in 40 months, ahead of its 42 month planned completion time.
The project has the distinction of being Pakistan and AJ&K’s first hydropower IPP, the company said in a statement.
Located 7.5km downstream of the 1000MW Mangla Dam, the run-of-river project uses water released from the Mangla hydro plant.
The project was supported financially with loans from the Asian Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, International Finance Corporation, and France’s Société de Promotion et de Participation pour la Coopération Economique.
