In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi said that the project’s reservoir would inundate large parts of land in the northern part of Jammu & Kashmir. The statement says that the land is an integral part of India by virtue of its accession to it in 1947.
Pakistan has however rejected the claims, saying that the dam will be built within its water resources management policy.
The dam, to be located on the Indus river, is scheduled to be completed within seven years at a cost of US$6.5B.
