The Water & Power Development Authority, which owns Mangla, said the cost has gone up mainly because of general increases in construction estimates. That included additional costs for resettlement and compensation for the people who would be affected by the dam raising.
The project aims to increase the height of the dam by around 40ft. The change should increase its storage capacity to partially offset storage lost from the reservoir due to silting since it was completed around 30 years ago.
