Anatoly Chubais, chairman of the board of directors of the RAO Unified Energy Systems (UES) electricity monopoly in Russia, has proposed uniting the operations of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power plant and the Sayan Aluminium Plant in the Khkasia region. Chubais has recently held talks with the management of the hydro and aluminium plants to obtain their views on the proposal.
The idea to create a large industrial company on the basis of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydro plant have been considered in Russia for some time, but have never reached such an advanced stage as now. Reports indicate that the aluminium plant was designed to consume up to 50% of the hydroelectric station’s power. However, at present the aluminium plant is using 25% of the electricity provided by a different hydro plant on the Yenisei river.
