NHPC Ltd. and BEML Ltd., two Indian public sector undertakings, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing desilting and dredging solutions for hydroelectric power plants. The agreement was formalized on December 16, 2024, at BEML Soudha in Bangalore.
The MoU was exchanged by Uday Shanker Sahi, Executive Director (R&D) of NHPC, and RGK Rao, Head of SBU – Aerospace at BEML, in the presence of senior officials, including Ajit Kumar Srivastav, Director – Defence Business, BEML.
The collaboration aims to address the problem of sedimentation in dams by creating cost-effective, “Make in India” solutions. These innovations are expected to improve the efficiency of power generation, extend the lifespan of turbines and water systems, and reduce maintenance costs.
In addition to hydropower applications, the technology will have broader uses, such as clearing canals and culverts during urban flooding, supporting dredging operations in waterways and coastal regions, and aiding India’s Maritime Vision 2030 and Sagarmala projects. The solutions will be tested in pilot projects and may be implemented at other hydroelectric plants nationwide.
NHPC CMD R.K. Chaudhary stated: “We are thrilled to partner with BEML Ltd. to develop state-of-the-art desilting and dredging solutions for the hydroelectric power sector. This collaboration underscores our dedication to innovation, sustainability, and the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Together, we aim to enhance power generation efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and support India’s ambitious renewable energy objectives.”
BEML CMD Shantanu Roy added: “This strategic cooperation marks a significant milestone in our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and self-reliance. By leveraging our collective strengths, we aim to develop advanced desilting and dredging solutions that not only enhance the efficiency of hydroelectric power plants but also contribute to the nation’s broader goals of improving infrastructure and water management systems.”
NHPC, India’s largest hydropower developer, operates 22 hydro power stations and has diversified into solar and wind energy. Its total installed capacity is 7,232.90MW. BEML, a key player in defense, mining, and construction equipment, has a strong manufacturing and R&D base, with a presence across India.
