President Kim Daejung of Korea has said that he personally opposes construction of the Tonggang dam in the northern part of the Korean peninsula.
The president has questioned whether the government should push ahead with dam construction in the face of strong opposition from environmentalists. He is also uncertain whether constructing the dam will solve the water shortage problems in what is a densely populated metropolitan area.
Daejung has said that the final decision on whether to build a dam on the Tonggang river will be based on scientific information and will be made through a consultation between the government, civic organisations and environmentalists in the not too distant future.
