The construction of the Bakun hydro project needs to be accelerated to meet the growing demand for electricity, according to Malaysia’s prime minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. He is reported as saying that unless efforts are taken to increase power generation, the country would eventually be faced with the problem of very rapid growth in industry, but a very slow growth in power projects.
Mahathir said that even if the government revives the Bakun hydro project now, it would take between five and six years before electricity could be generated
