Unit 2 of the Ialy Hydropower Plant Expansion in Vietnam was successfully synchronized to the national grid at 8:28pm on 13 December 2024, 18 days ahead of schedule.

The expansion project, led by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), has been under construction since mid-2021. The project, which has a designed capacity of 360MW across two units, is being managed by EVN’s Power Project Management Board 2 (EVNPMB2) as the investor representative, with Power Engineering Consulting Joint Stock Company 1 serving as the consulting unit for the project’s design.

The completion of Unit 2 ahead of schedule was made possible through close coordination among EVN, EVNPMB2, Ialy Hydropower Company, consulting units, construction contractors, and equipment suppliers. A key strategy that accelerated progress was the simultaneous installation of the rotors for Units 1 and 2, with work arranged in parallel over three daily shifts, including weekends and holidays. This approach allowed Unit 2 to be synchronized immediately after Unit 1, reducing the project timeline by approximately three months.

Once fully operational, the expansion will increase power generation capacity for the national grid, particularly during peak demand periods. The plant is expected to boost annual power generation by about 233 million kWh, improving the efficiency of the entire system. Additionally, the expansion will help reduce CO2 emissions, lower the intensity and operational time of existing units, and extend the lifespan of the equipment, resulting in savings on maintenance and repair costs.
