The existing 138m high Mangla dam – which has been in operation since 1967 – is an earthfill dam with a clay core and gravel and rolled sandstone shoulders. It’s crest level is planned to be raised by 9m to increase its storage capacity. The orifices of the main spillway will be modified and gate controls also shifted. Ancillary works like the intake and other embankments along the rim of the reservoir will also be raised and/or strengthened for the raised conservation level. No modification of the power house is planned.
Pre-qualification will be conducted generally in accordance with the World Bank’s pre-qualification procedures and is open to Pakistani and foreign firms licensed by the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC). Under PEC byelaws for the construction and operation of engineering works, foreign firm are required to form joint venture with Pakistani constructors. The participation of the Pakistani constructor is expected to be substantive. Closing date for applications is 2 September 2003.
