The World Bank has agreed to give Rs1.6B (US$32M) to Pakistan for construction of dams in Balochistan province. The World Bank and the government will shortly hold talks to finalise a landmark agreement which aims to improve the irrigation system in Balochistan, said an official of the Ministry of Finance.
Part of the plans include recharging the underground watertable in the province. The dams will be of great importance if the rapidly depleting underground watertable is to be sustained. The spokesman warned that if urgent measures were not adopted to manage the water resources of Balcohistan, the province would be engulfed in a serious water crisis.
