According to the Interfax news agency, the work, which began on 3 August, involves the overhaul of a water channel linking a turbine. Costs of the work is estimated at US$3.29M and is being carries out by Gidrospetstonnelstroi.

The loss of electricity production at the Zhinval plant will be compensated for by the re-opening of the Inguri hydroelectric power plant following repairs. The Zhinval plant was built on the Aragvi river, 70km north of Tbilisi, in 1985. It is owned by the Tbilisi city government.
