Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority has confirmed that the 1530MW Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project will commence electricity generation in 2025.
Situated on Tunnel No. 5 of Tarbela Dam, the project comprises three generating units of 510MW each, and is slated to contribute approximately 1.347 billion units of low-cost and eco-friendly electricity annually to the national grid upon its completion.
The World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank are providing US$390 and 300 million respectively for the project, which will increase the installed capacity of the Tarbela dam to 6418MW from 4888MW.
Back in June 2021, ajoint venture of Harbin Electric International Company and Harbin Electric Machinery Company (HEIC-HEMC) won the US$241.1 million contract for electro-mechanical (E&M) works following an international competitive bidding process.
Power Construction Corporation of China Limited (PCCCL) was awarded a US$354.6 million contract for civil works at the project in May 2021.
